How It Operates
To ensure the security and safety of navigation along the Danube, the Agency undertakes the following:
- constant surveillance of the river-bed state;
- timely removal and rehabilitation of out-of-service navigation markers and maintenance of the fairway in compliance with the requirements and recommendations of the Danube commission;
- provides operative information on overall fairway depth and width;
- fairway adjustments;
- maintenance of operational navigation conditions in the Bulgarian section of the Danube;
- generating hydrographic charts of hazardous navigation sections using echo sounding measurements;
- issuing bulletins on navigation conditions, notices to skippers and daily broadcast of a ‘Hydrometeorological bulletin’;
- carrying out hydrographic measurements in bottleneck sections and the safety of the Ruse – Giurgiu bridge;
- keeping constant track of hydromorphological changes, announcing critical navigation areas (shallow sections) and taking measures accordingly;
- measuring water amounts using Doppler technology;
- daily announcement of forecast water levels for hydrometeorological stations Ruse and Silistra;
- conducting meteorological, climate, and weather observations;
- issuing water body utilization permits for sediment abstraction from the Danube;
- maintaining conditions for the timely localization and elimination of possible oil spills;
- establishing an optimal organization for the timely estimation of the nature and consequences of a disaster, emergency situation or catastrophe.
