On July 30, 2025, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) hosted in Ruse the 74th extraordinary session of the Bulgarian-Romanian Joint Commission for the Maintenance and Improvement of the Fairway in the common section of the Danube River.
The session brought together representatives of EAEMDR, AFDJ Galati, the transport ministries of Bulgaria and Romania, port authorities, and institutions responsible for navigation monitoring and control in both countries.
The discussions focused on addressing the challenges posed by critically low water levels in the common river stretch and on defining urgent joint measures to ensure safe and uninterrupted navigation.
Participants emphasized the need for close bilateral coordination, timely and transparent information through the administrations’ websites, and proactive measures, including enhanced traffic control, to prevent incidents on the river.
The possibility of regulatory changes in Bulgaria, including sanctions for non-compliance with local authorities’ decisions, was also discussed as part of efforts to improve navigation management under critical conditions.
