One of the five UN regional commissions with the major aim of promoting economic co-operation between member-states, creating conditions for socio-economic progress and development, and achieving higher living standard. EAEMDR participates in the inner waterway work group at UNECE.
Created on the initiative of the European Commission in view to establish regional EU policy on partnership between interested parties for a more focused achievement of priorities in competitiveness, innovation, energy efficiency and territorial rapprochement. Its major goal is, through strategic planning for a large geographical region with unifying characteristics, to work out a programme for the execution of specific projects of significance to Danube countries and the whole of the European Union. The Danube region includes 14 countries with a population of more than 100 million people.

International and inter-government organization established by the Convention Regarding the Regime of Navigation on the Danube signed 18 August 1948, enforced 11 May 1949 (the so-called “Belgrade Convention”). Ensure free navigation regime along the river, act on improving navigation, draft recommendations to Danube states and specialized river administration on carrying out of these activities, establish a uniform organization of navigation along the whole navigable stretch of the Danube.
Founded in 1997 as a trilateral work group of waterway administrations of Germany, Austria and Slovakia with the aim of developing geographical data exchange and close co-operation in the area of managing the Danube waterway. Since 1999 the group receives support from the Danube Commission in deals with issues pertaining to river information services. In 2000 it is joined by Hungary, in 2002 – Croatia and Romania, and 2003 – the Ukraine. Bulgaria, along with Serbia, become full partners in 2004. Russia joins afterwards. Each year the Danube GIS Forum holds an annual conference called DISC (Danube Information Service Conference).
Established by virtue of the Agreement between the People’s Republic of Bulgaria and People’s Republic of Romania in maintain and improve fairway in the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube and Rules of organization and operation of the joint Bulgarian-Romanian commission on fairway improvement in the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube signed in 1955. It is an annual event with representatives on the Bulgarian and Romanian side where numerous matters pertaining to navigation in the common Bulgarian-Romanian section of the river are discussed.
Regulated in the Rules for technical maintenance and service of the Danube bridge between Rousse and Giurgiu dating from 1954, when the bridge itself came into operation. General facility checks are carried out every five years.
Established in accordance with Art 18 of the Agreement between the governments of the Republic of Bulgarian and Republic of Romania for the creation of a joint commercial structure – operating the new combined (road and rail-road) connecting Vidin (BG) and Calafat (RO). The joint commission performs annual technical audit between the months of September-October, as well as emergency audit as necessary. Commission operation is regulated by the Rules for maintenance and technical audit of the Danube bridge between Vidin and Calafat.
