The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River and the Lower Danube Administration – Galați officially marked the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Agreement between Bulgaria and Romania on the maintenance and improvement of the fairway in the Bulgarian–Romanian section of the Danube River. This agreement established the Joint Bulgarian–Romanian Commission, which has coordinated activities to ensure safe and secure navigation along the river since 1955.
The ceremonial 75th session was attended not only by the two river administrations but also by representatives of the Ministries of Transport of Bulgaria and Romania, as well as Romania’s Ministry of Regional Development.
During the meeting, the importance of good cooperation between the two river administrations in their efforts to ensure better navigability along the Danube River was emphasized.
For seven decades now, the Commission has been a key factor in ensuring improved navigation along one of Europe’s most important transport corridors. Over the years, the two countries have jointly removed navigational obstacles, improved signaling, and introduced more effective mechanisms for information exchange. As early as 1957, a daily operational communication between Ruse and Giurgiu was established to enable faster coordination, which remains to this day.
Hydrological data from recent decades show significant changes in the regime of the Danube—weakening of the spring high waters and lower autumn water levels. This year follows the trend of the extremely dry 2022, with substantial periods below the multi-year minimum.
Today, 70 years after the official establishment of the Commission, the good relations and coordination between the Executive Agency for the Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River and the Lower Danube Administration of Romania continue. The numerous joint projects currently being carried out by the two administrations are clear proof of this.
