Based on the results made during the previous WANDA project, the main task of CO-WANDA was to launch the initiative to develop a document that provides clear rules and guidelines for the management of navigation waste.

All the activities and measures set out in the project are aimed at developing an International Convention on Ship-generated Waste on the Danube River to harmonize the management of these wastes across the river. Partners from EU Member States as well as from non-EU countries continue their close cooperation, which is even expanded and attracting new partners. International inland navigation organizations, environmental protection, as well as stakeholders, administrations and research institutes as observers have supported the development and achievement of a common agreement on shipments and reception of ship-generated waste.
